£300 bursary for art studies is a feather in Sophie's cap
A LIFE-SIZE origami swan has earned a Derby College student a £300 bursary towards her studies.

Sophie Clouston, 19, who is studying on an art foundation diploma course, used hundreds of intricately folded pieces of paper to create the piece.

She was one of five students shortlisted for the award given by the Derby Decorative and Fine Arts Society.

Sophie, who attended Ecclesbourne School before starting the one-year pre-degree foundation course at Derby College, took her inspiration from the Roald Dahl short story – The Swan.

She said: "It was a lot of trial and error at the beginning as I've not used any glue. All the pieces of paper are inter-linked and I needed to get the size and weight of all the hundreds of pieces of folded paper just right."

The swan and other work by Derby College students will be on view at The Roundhouse in Pride Park, the Joseph Wright Centre, Cathedral Road and the Heanor campus until Friday.
